ODA is pleased to be offering a brand new training program for the industry.


'Introduction to Optics'

The primary goal of this training program is to prepare candidates for their new role within the optical industry and is suited to new employees or existing team members that have not yet undertaken the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing qualification.

This training program offers candidates the necessary technical and customer service skills needed to work as an optical assistant or begin a career in optical dispensing. The program ensures they are capable of effectively contributing to a practice environment from day one and will enhance their skills, knowledge, confidence and productivity. Pre-Employment
Training

In addition to providing this training program to Optometry Practices and Optical Businesses, we also offer a government endorsed, pre-employment training program available to those looking to gain employment within the industry. This is currently being offered face-to-face in various states in collaboration with the Sarina Russo Group. If you are not currently working in the optical industry and are interested in this opportunity, please contact us below.

Optical Assistant / Dispensing Induction Training

Our 'Introduction to Optics' training program covers the topics listed below. The flexible, online model means the training can be undertaken remotely, from anywhere in the country (or the world) including rural areas where face-to-face training may be difficult.

 

The full program includes a nationally recognised unit accredited by ACOD (RTO: 45068) BSBCUS301 – Deliver and monitor a service to customers, which can be credited towards further future learning, such as the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing course. An ODA certificate of completion and BSBCUS301 statement of attainment accredited by ACOD will be awarded to those that successfully complete the program.​

NB: Candidates may register for the online program from any location or country. You do not need to be an Australian resident to complete this training program nor do you need to be employed. 

*Face-to-face training is also available in Australia and New Zealand and is subject to demand. Please contact us to discuss your needs if you are interested in tailored workplace or group training.

These are the topics that are covered:

  • Follow safe work practices.

  • Communication strategies for successful interactions with clients and coworkers.

  • BSBCUS301 – Deliver and monitor a service to customers. (Including; Identify customer needs, Deliver a service to customers, Monitor and report on service delivery.)

  • Introduction to eye physiology and basic refractive errors.

  • Understanding common eye disorders and diseases. 

  • Processes and assessment of vision overview.

  • Interpreting an optical prescription.

  • Basic introduction to ophthalmic lens designs.

  • Understanding and selecting lens materials.

  • Introduction to frame anatomy and materials.

  • Appropriate frame selection to satisfy face shape, colour theory and prescription requirements.

  • Essential contact lens knowledge.

  • The basics of health fund claiming.

  • Introduction to frequently used dispensing tools and their correct use. 

  • The importance of frame and facial measurements for dispensing.

  • Introduction to frame adjustments and fitting techniques.

 

The total cost for the online program is $395 (AUD / incl. GST) per candidate and involves three separate, 4.5 hour live zoom sessions plus an assignment. The sessions are interactive (not pre-recorded) and include a workbook and a knowledge quiz to ensure engagement.

 

This training program runs four (4) times per year (once per quarter.) The next program starts on November 12th 2025. Pre-registration is required. REGISTER HERE

Program Requirements: 

 

  • Tools and Resources: You will require access to a stable internet connection to join our Zoom sessions and a computer to download learning materials / upload course work.

     

  • Attendance: Full attendance across all three sessions is mandatory for program completion. 

     

  • Assessments: Successful completion of homework and a written assignment, completed in your own time are required to achieve the nationally recognised unit, BSBCUS301 – Deliver and monitor a service to customers.

After you have successfully completed your enrolment and registration, you will receive login details for our learning portal. Please check your junk folder if you have not received any correspondance.
