Optical dispensing is a profession with far more breadth and opportunity than many realise - including optical dispensers themselves. While the role is often framed as a support position within an optometry practice, the truth is that qualified dispensers can build full, rewarding careers that extend well beyond the dispensing desk. One of the most significant, yet frequently overlooked pathways is practice ownership. Dispensers already hold deep product knowledge, strong patient-care skills, and practical insight into how successful practices operate day to day, giving them a solid foundation for leadership and business ownership. Whether as the sole owner or in business partnership.

Despite this, many talented dispensers are unaware that owning or co-owning an independent optical practice is even an option. The industry has traditionally defaulted to an “optometrist-led” model, leading many dispensers to assume they lack the authority or qualifications to take this next step. In reality, plenty of dispensers across Australia have successfully opened independent practices, partnered with optometrists or taken over existing stores, and built thriving businesses centred on exceptional dispensing expertise. The real barrier isn’t permission - it’s awareness, confidence, and access to guidance.

Many optometrists with three to five years’ experience are regularly seeking career pathways too, creating natural opportunities for dispenser–optometrist partnerships built on complementary strengths: clinical expertise paired with retail and business acumen. When built on mutual respect and shared goals, this partnership creates a holistic care model that strengthens community connections, builds loyalty, and sets independent practices apart from larger corporate chains.

While the responsibilities of practice ownership may seem daunting, the benefits and long-term opportunities should not be underestimated. Organisations such as Optical Dispensers Australia (ODA), Eyecare Plus and ProVision are available to guide young optometrists and dispensers through the business side of practice ownership and business partnerships, helping them avoid common mistakes and navigate the planning, financing, and acquisition processes.

For dispensers and optometrists who are curious about ownership but unsure where to begin - the message is clear: it is possible! With the right knowledge, mentorship, and preparation, practice ownership can be a natural and fulfilling extension of an optical career and your industry is here to support you.

In a strong show of industry collaboration, Optical Dispensers Australia (ODA), Eyecare Plus, ProVision, Vision Connection and Eyebenefit are proudly working together to guide entrepreneurs and open the door to successful business partnership and practice ownership.

Interested dispensers and optometrists are invited to join an interactive live webinar at 7pm (AEDT) on Wednesday 25th February to hear from a panel of experts and have all your questions answered. Visit odamembers.com.au/events to register.
