The federal government has enlisted HumanAbility, a not-for-profit industry-led organisation, to drive the advancement of education and workforce development in a variety of industries. Their role sees them work with industry stakeholders to research and articulate industry specific jobs demands, the needs of employers for future and current skills and develop qualifications and training packages that are responsive to and meet the needs of the industry.
How does this affect us?
It has been ten years since the current optical dispensing qualification was last updated, leaving parts of the course lagging behind when it comes to current industry advancements and technology. Unfortunately, the RTO's that deliver this course must adhere to the training package set by the government, including teaching several core and elective units that have become outdated since the last update in 2015.
The good news for the industry is that the ACOD directors, with the help of ODA and other industry supporters, led the process to get HumanAbility to prioritise the optical dispensing qualification review of HLT47815 Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing to ensure the sector remains vibrant, relevant and well-equipped to contribute effectively to Australia’s healthcare and economic needs.
HumanAbility has asked ODA, as Australia's leading body representing the optical dispensing profession, to ask employers in the field to participate in a one-on-one online interview during October as part of a functional analysis.
The aim of this analysis is to thoroughly understand the current and emerging needs within the sector. The analysis and review will focus on updating qualifications to reflect current industry practices, improve career pathways, and enhance the safety and quality of training to meet today's industry requirements and anticipate future challenges. More information on this project can be viewed on the project webpage.
If you are an employer of optical dispensers and would like to contribute towards this important work by participating in a 1:1 online interview, please reach out to HumanAbility directly via the details below as soon as possible:
